Pair of Staffordshire pottery Mansion House Dwarves, Staffordshire, c. 1830. Modelled after the Derby originals, as standing dwarves, dressed in brightly enamelled garments, and wearing large hats. Set upon circular leaf encrusted mound bases. All beneath a pearlware glaze. Height – 16.5 cm, 6 1/2”. Width – 8.5 cm, 3 3/8”. Condition – Chip to underside of one hat. Some typical wear to the overglaze enamels – please see images for detail. No restoration. Mansion House Dwarves were characters, employed to stand outside Mansion House London, wearing garish costume, and large hats, upon which were written notices of forthcoming events.
